After years of Service to the NYCD, I was told by the NYCD

It was time to fight for my rights!!

This Lawsuit has opened up a door for a new wave of Online 21st century journalists.

“THROUGH OUR EYES”

An exhibition of artwork from Rikers Island. January 20, 2010 Submitted by Ms. Hightower

The Arts Horizons Le Roy Neiman Art Center (LNAC) will be hosting “Through Our Eyes” on Wednesday, January 20th from 5:30pm – 8:00pm

“Through Our Eyes” was organized by Ms Hightower, Visual Arts Coordinator at Horizon Academy, a District 79 alternative high school on Rikers Island, in partnership with Arts Horizons LeRoy Neiman Art Center.

Ms Hightower, the Arts Coordinator on Rikers Island has been igniting a passion for the visual arts among incarcerated men, aged eighteen years and over, since September 2004. They were experiencing frustration, anxiety and a lack of self esteem, as a result of falling between the cracks academically. Ms. Hightower recognized that art could be used as a means to increase their comprehension and, in turn, allow them to excel in the areas of reading and writing. The Art Program on Rikers Island serves to bring to the surface inmates’ hidden talents, thereby allowing them to express themselves in a peaceful, uninhibited and tranquil environment.

Over the past few years, the Arts Program has successfully featured exhibits in local universities and museums. In addition, inmates’ artwork has been displayed at Family Days, assemblies and Featured Artist Days. Students have also created murals that are displayed at several correctional facilities. It is Ms. Hightower’s desire to continue to give students a voice by sharing their artwork in various venues throughout the community.
