GANG AWARENESS!!

The 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc are concerned about their youth and they are taking action to keep gangs out of their communities and schools.  On November 24, 2002 Eric Taylor, CEO of Secure Person, Former Chief of the New York City Department of Correction and the HYPE "Helping Youth & Parents Excel" Staff conducted a state of the art informative gang awareness workshop.

Mr. Phillip Andrews- Public Relations Director for the 100 Black Men of Long Island introduced Eric Taylor." My name is Eric Taylor, retired 5 years ago with 24 1/2 years.  When I first took over at the New York City Department of Correction, the stabbings where very high.  We reduced violence and stabbings by 83 percent and formed G.I.U. "Gang Intelligence Unit".  Gangs in schools and communities are a large problem.  Our presentation today is designed to make you aware of the gangs and let you know how we can help the community and schools.

Mr. Herman Pyatt-Retired Captain, NYC Department of Correction continued the presentation and really got the attention of this reporter and audience by explaining what Rock the Colors is all about!  The meaning of sports gear and how gangs use color and placement.  Rocking the Colors is a detailed science that parents, teachers, and community leaders really need to be tuned into.  Mr. Pyatt who has has years of expeience with gangs and gang intelligence showed how wearing of colors on certain parts of your body signals who and what you are in the gang world.

Mr. Norbert E. Davidson- Gang Awareness Prevention Program Coordinator for the Division of Student Safety and Prevention Services in the Department of Education continued the presentation by first doing numerous hand and body signs that he was a Latin King.  No one in the room knew what signs he was rocking or throwing.  Again, that's why this Gang Awareness Presentation was really touching base and keeping the audience on the edge of their seat because not knowing what the gang culture is could get you killed or your children hurt.

Mr. Gene Williamson, also a staff member of the Gang Awareness group "HYPE" Helping Youth & Parents Excel conducted an outstanding video power point presentation that was a serious must have education.

As the former Youth Editor at the New York Beacon News and present Publisher of the Guardian Chronicle Magazine for Law Enforcement, Community, and Youth, I have seen many youth and gang presentations, but this total powerful picture presented by this experienced staff of HYPE is not just hype, it's the Real Deal information and education needed for law enforcement, parents, teachers, and anyone concerned about the safety of their children.

Did you know that N. C. in gang language means Neighborhood Crips?  Did you know that Camel means Crip- All- My-Entire-Life?  Mr. Eric Taylor stated, "Today, we are offerring you education.  I use this same education to watch what my child wears.  If  I am aware about gang colors, then my child will not be wearing that color.

Mr. Norbert E. Davidson stated, "What the men in the community must do is build a circle of hope around our children."

Assembly Woman Hooper spoke on the outstanding opportunity for college scholarships for community youth and the requirements to be considered.
