This Street Beat will change every week! A Reliable 911 System The citizens of New York City need a reliable 911 communications system. We depend on as close to a failsafe system as possible; but on March 19th 2004 we received a rude awakening. On March 19th 2004 the 911 system which is operated by Verizon failed miserably. Residents of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island were needlessly put in harms way. Verizon blamed the failure on human error. Regardless of the cause of the failure, human error or technological, a proper back up system must be put in place to avoid something like this from occurring again. Not having a proper back up system is like playing Russian roulette with our safety. Sincerely, Victor Swinton President N.Y.P.D.
